The original handcrafted Vellies by In-Step from Jeffreys Bay in South Africa come in different leather options and colours.
The name Vellies – or Vel(d)skoens/ Vel(d)skoene originates from Afrikaans and means vel (“skin”) – later on adapted to veld (“field”) and skoen (“shoe”).
Vellies were made and worn by the “Voortrekkers” who migrated away from the Cape on foot and by oxcart centuries ago. The shoes had to be comfortable and robust at the same time.
Vellies are made of soft upper leather or suede, which is attached to a leather foot-bed and a rubber sole without tacks or nails – the leather is sewn. Generally, the Vellies were and are worn barefoot.
Since it is a genuine leather product, Vellies can initially sit relatively tight. They widen and perfectly adapt to the foot after a short time of wearing them in. The length of the Vellies should not be much longer than the length of your feet.
Vellies are made from processed suede, hence scars and slight scratches are to be regarded as a sign of authenticity. Vellies are a natural product and colour deviations of up to 10% are therefore normal. Every shoe is really unique.
